Can Ortho-K Lenses Cause Dry Eye? How We Treat Both at Our Princeton Eye Clinic

Ortho-K lenses offer a convenient way to correct nearsightedness while you sleep, allowing you to enjoy clear vision during the day without glasses or daytime contacts. At Eye Care Associates of Princeton, we also use Ortho-K as part of myopia management for children with progressive nearsightedness.

Because Ortho-K lenses are worn overnight, some patients wonder whether they can cause dry eye. While Ortho-K does not necessarily cause dry eye disease, dryness or irritation can occur, particularly when the ocular surface is already unhealthy or the lenses are not fitting properly.

Why Can Ortho-K Lenses Feel Dry?

Ortho-K lenses are custom-designed rigid lenses that gently reshape the cornea overnight. Like other contact lenses, they interact with the tear film and surface of the eye. If you already have dry eye, meibomian gland dysfunction, blepharitis, or poor tear quality, wearing lenses overnight may make symptoms more noticeable.

Dryness associated with Ortho-K may cause:

  • Burning, stinging, or gritty sensations

  • Redness when waking

  • Fluctuating or blurry vision

  • Increased light sensitivity

  • Discomfort when inserting or removing lenses

These symptoms should not simply be ignored. Comfortable Ortho-K wear depends on a healthy ocular surface, proper lens hygiene, and a precise lens fit.

We Evaluate Dry Eye Before and During Ortho-K Treatment

At our Princeton eye clinic, we take both vision correction and eye health into account when fitting Ortho-K lenses. Before recommending treatment, we evaluate the cornea, tear film, eyelids, and overall ocular surface.

Follow-up visits are also important. They allow us to check how the cornea is responding, confirm that the lenses are fitting correctly, and address dryness or irritation before it interferes with treatment.

Sometimes improving lens cleaning habits or adjusting the fit is enough to improve comfort. When dry eye disease is contributing to symptoms, we can address the underlying problem directly.

Treating Dry Eye Alongside Ortho-K in Princeton

Dry eye treatment is not one-size-fits-all. We first determine what is contributing to the problem, such as inflammation, clogged meibomian glands, or eyelid debris.

Depending on your needs, our Princeton eye doctors may recommend treatments such as OptiLight IPL, LipiFlow, BlephEx, or NuLIDS. These options are designed to address different factors involved in chronic dry eye and eyelid health.

Treating dry eye can help create a healthier ocular surface, which may also make wearing Ortho-K lenses more comfortable and predictable.

Do You Have to Stop Wearing Ortho-K?

Not necessarily. Experiencing dryness does not automatically mean Ortho-K is no longer an option. The right approach depends on the severity and cause of your symptoms, your lens fit, and the health of your eyes.

If you are considering Ortho-K or experiencing dryness while wearing your lenses, contact Eye Care Associates of Princeton in Princeton, NJ at (609) 536-1017 to schedule an evaluation and learn how we can help keep your vision clear and your eyes comfortable.
